inspiring the next generation of explorers and innovators
Since the beginning, we’ve designed, delivered and sponsored programs that support learning and research in neuroscience. While we have supported passionate neuroscientists of all ages over the years, our current programs focus on grades 8 to 12 because they are the next generation of explorers and innovators
bright lights in the lab
Who: Grades 6 through 10
What: Summer camp
Where: University of Toronto Schools
Every year, students have the opportunity to meet other students who are passionate about the brain, discover the vital role of neuroscience, and pursue their own research topic. Our scientific methods and themes continue to evolve (from snails to ‘brain mapping’) to stay current and relevant. This year’s topic: Using their brains and AI to make important discoveries!
We proudly offer scholarships and financial aid to students who qualify. Click here to learn more.

brain bee
Who: Grades 9 through 12
What: Competitive neuroscience quiz
Where: University of Toronto
The Brain Bee is a competition for high school students grades 9 through 12. It’s like a spelling bee where contestants answer questions about the brain at the hosting university in their area. Winners progress to National and International levels. Firefly has been the proud local sponsor of the Toronto Brain Bee since 2011.
To show you how bright these students are, click here to check out one of the short ‘docu-videos’ we co-produced with one of the winners in the 2011 competition!
animators
Who: Students in Grade 5, 6 and 7
What: Introduction to neuroscience
From 2017 - 2018, we ran our Animators camp for young brainiacs to learn about how the brain works and how they can use the principles of neuroscience to improve brain health. To showcase their research, they created a stop motion animated film about the brain, guided by professional animators. Such insights and creativity! We’re hoping to reintroduce that program in the future.
research support
Who: Neuroscience researchers
What: Research grants
Over the years, we have supported important research with some brilliant minds. We have funded ground-breaking research at the University of Toronto’s Center for Research in Neurodegenerative Disease. We also created the Spark Award and worked in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Canada to award 5 grants for novel neurodegenerative disease research that is well-informed but requires further evidence.
